Organisational Development 

Culture, climate, and change management will be addressed as part of organisational development. Organisational culture is defined as the collective behaviour of humans who are part of an organisation and the meanings that the people attach to events and actions.  Simply stated, it is the personality of the organisation. It fulfils three broad functions:

  • It gives Employees something to identify with

  • It facilitates the social system

  • It shapes Behaviour

 

Culture includes less visible elements such as lived values, knowledge, attitudes, assumptions and beliefs. 

It also includes more visible elements such as the espoused mission, vision, publications and values; communication, language and rituals; ways of conducting business; stakeholder views and treatment including ethics; group dynamics; heroes and stories; dress, signage, artifacts, and interior design.

All these must be reviewed with the desired culture in mind.

 

Culture responds to people, and management may want to define the desired culture to support the implementation and achievement of the strategy. HR can then be instrumental in putting interventions and changes in place to develop the desired culture.

A climate study will give a good indication of the mood within the organisation. 

Change management is used to assist people to work through their resistance to change.  Change management can improve teamwork, assist in introducing new initiatives and create synergy between departments.

 

Performance Management

Performance Management is the vehicle that drives the strategy of a company. 

  • Individual objectives (Key Performance Areas and Indicators) need to be contracted annually with individuals.

 

 

The SMART standards for objectives will be applied: 

S – Specific 

M – Measurable

A – Achievable

R – Realistic 

T – Timelines Defines

  • Job Profiles will be reviewed and redrafted to ensure that these are in line with the overall organisational strategy.

  • Performance Tracking is a continuous activity and line managers should have regular one-on-one check-in sessions with their team members to make sure they stay on track. 

  • A formal health check is done twice yearly. 

  • A performance management system that is practical for the environment will be implemented.
